Red Wine: Your New Beauty Beverage

Wine has long been considered an elixir of good health, and by long we mean LONG. There is evidence of medicinal use (okay probably some enjoyment too) of wine dating as far back as 7,500 B.C.  A glass of red wine is consumed daily in French, Italian and Greek cultures to maintain optimum health.

But what exactly is that daily glass meant to do, well aside from being delicious and helping you unwind? According to health experts, a glass of red wine a day has been linked to lower risk of the common cold, heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s, cancer, & diabetes. But wait! There’s more… much more.

The cellar may no longer be the appropriate place to store your favorite Shiraz.  Make room in your Caboodle or makeup bag because a bottle of Bordeaux could be one of your new beauty best friends.

Beauty Sleep: Wine contains melatonin, a chemical that can help coordinate the body’s physiological rhythms and set the brain’s biological clock. Drink 50 to 100ml for the perfect amount of melatonin for peaceful night of beauty sleep.

Beautiful Skin: Poly-phenolic flavonoids, free radical fighting antioxidants, are found abundantly in red wine. These antioxidants help protect the skin from ultraviolent radiation (NOT a substitute for sunscreen!), environmental damage, and slow down the aging process. In addition, drinking red wine stimulates the development of new cells in the skin’s outer layers helping it appear younger, glowing, and healthy. While grapes are the primary source of the antioxidants, the concentration of them is much higher in red wine because the skin and seeds are part of the fermentation process but are both removed when making grape juice. So reach for that wine instead of the Welch’s if you want to!

Beautiful Hair: Resveratrol, found in you guessed it, can help aid in hair loss. It inhibits inflammation and cell death to help prevent hair from falling out and aids in hair growth. And while we’re on the subject, if you’re experiencing thinning hair, we recommend hair thickening Nioxin shampoos and conditioners, which just happen to be buy one get one 50% off right now.

What more could you want from a beverage? Red wine just might be the perfect delicious compliment to your beauty regiment!

And like all good things wine consumption should be done in moderation. You love your OPI and Essie (which is buy 2 get the 3rd free right now btw), but you wouldn’t paint your hands and arms with them either.

Some Hair History & Dry Shampoo

At the turn of the 20th Century women went one whole month between salon visits and in the 1950’s they went about a week. While this may sound totally unhygienic and kind of gross to the modern woman, we’ve all seen Titanic, Chicago, and The Seven Year Itch enough times to know how darn glamorous females were back then.

The simple and scientific fact is that hair just doesn’t need to be washed every day. If there’s just something about lathering, rinsing, and possibly repeating that just starts your day off on the right foot then by all means. However, if you’re a fan of the snooze button and are always running out the door while putting on your shoes then the miracle of dry shampoo is for you! No more sacrificing beauty sleep in the name of well, beauty.

In the 1960’s the first dry shampoo was born. If you’ve never heard of or tried dry shampoo before, start deciding what to do with all of that time that’s just been freed up for you in the morning. Dry shampoo is an extra fine powder that is sprayed onto the roots and absorbs excess oil from the scalp between washes, leaving hair manageable, styleable, and quite importantly, smelling good.  While dry shampoo cannot completely replace a good ol’ wash, lather, and rinse it sure is a time saver once or twice a week.

Not sure where to start? No problem! We’ve got quite a few options for every hair type and budget.

Batiste, Dry Shampoo $8.99

With its fun and bright packaging, Batiste really pays homage to the 1960 roots of dry shampoo (pun intended), but the labels aren’t just all for show. Batiste comes in different scents like Tropical and Cherry, as well as different colors for red heads, blondes and brunettes!

KEVIN.MURPHY, FRESH.HAIR $23

According to Lucky Magazine FRESH.HAIR is “Dry Shampoo Heaven.” A dry cleaner for the hair that gives body and texture, removes odors, excess oil, and has a light creamsicle scent. Bonus: For every can of FRESH.HAIR sold, a financial contribution will be made to help reduce global carbon emissions.

Redken, Powder Refresh 01 $18

Recipient of a Best of Beauty Award from Allure magazine, and part of our current Buy One Get One 50% Off event, Redken’s Powder Refresh 01 is great for every hair type and color. It has a cooling effect on the scalp, especially perfect for that hot Texas summer right around the corner.

DevaCurl, No-Poo Quick Cleanser $20

Recommended by in InSyle, Elle, Allure, Lucky, and Glamour Magazines, the No-Poo Quick Cleanser’s white residue free formula is known for what it lacks: harsh parabens, sulfates, and phthalates!

Quick Tips for successful dry shampooing:

  • Leave enough distance between the can and your head when applying (Each brand usually has its own recommended distance).
  • Focus on your roots as it is the source of the oil.
  • Never use on wet hair (DRY shampoo).
  • Let dry shampoo rest two minutes after applying before styling.

We hope you enjoyed this brief hair history lesson. If you have any more questions about dry shampooing please stop by one of our four Austin locations and one of our lovely Beauty Store ladies will be happy to assist in finding the perfect dry shampoo for you!
